Pollster Frank Lutz claimed that only 5 million voters really count when it came to deciding who would win the US presidential race.

He said that only "5% of those in 20 states" make a difference, while the counts in 40 of the 50 states will have no impact on the result.

He spoke to Jim Naughtie as Republicans lay out their battle plan at their convention in Tampa, Florida, designed to squeeze an advantage in the handful of states where both sides believe the presidency will be decided in November.
