Sir Ludwig Guttmann was the doctor who believed that sport was an opportunity for people with disabling injuries and held an archery event during the 1948 Olympic Games.

Olympic and Commonwealth Games medallist in table tennis, Philip Lewis, who was one of Sir Ludwig's patients, told Jim Naughtie about his memories of the man whose ideas produced the second-biggest sporting event in the world, which opens on Wednesday.

The Paralympic torch is due to arrive at Stoke Mandeville in Buckinghamshire, at the hospital where the idea for the games was born.
