Family forced to flee extremist-held northern Mali

More than 430,000 people have fled the north of the West African country since Islamist extremists, some with links to al-Qaeda, took control in April.

The crisis follows a major drought which has left more than 4.5 million people threatened by malnutrition and many people in the Islamist-held north have been forced to flee from both problems.

Tenine, a market trader from the northern town of Gao, told the Today programme's Mike Thomson how she has to flee the city.

"We knew we couldn't last much longer and the violence was getting worse," she said.
