Mitt Romney is now formally the Republican candidate for the job of president of the United States, but what can we expect if he beats Barack Obama in 10 weeks and becomes the most powerful man in the world?

Samuel L Popkin, professor of Political Science at the University of California, believes that most of Mitt Romney's problems have had to do with the obstacles his party "forced him to overcome to get the nomination".

"A fragmented party... forced him out of his comfort zone," he said.

Bill Whalen, research fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, told the Today programme Romney "struggled... to put the finger on the pulse" at his acceptance speech.

"Mitt Romney would like to come accross as someone you would like to have a drink with, but comes accross as meeting your boss at a picnic," he said.
