A fisherman from Shetland has recovered a message in a bottle that has been drifting in the sea for 98 years, a new world record.

The message was not an SOS to the world from a lonely castaway, but part of a huge batch of bottles released in 1914 to help map marine flows.

Dr Bill Turrell, head of marine ecosystems with Marine Scotland Science, who hold the logs of that original experiment, explained that the bottles were "specially weighted to bob along the seabed".

He pointed out that the bottle that was discovered was a failure as it "only moved nine miles in a 100 years".
