The Syrian conflict has intensified in recent weeks, with the regime increasing aerial bombardments of opposition areas and rebel fighters using heavy weapons captured on the battlefield. The fighting has sent a new surge of refugees into neighbouring countries, and aid agencies and host countries are scrambling to respond.
Catherine Carter from Save the Children's emergency team, in Amman, told the Today programme presenter, John Humphrys of the "apalling conditions". She said that "strong winds are creating sandstorms and the tents are flimsy, not providing cover," adding: "Children are already having respiratory problems and food is scarce."
