A new film adaptation of Tolstoy's epic novel of love and loss, Anna Karenina, is challenging the traditional idea of how to make a period drama.

It is shot almost entirely in a dilapidated 19th century theatre.

The director Joe Wright explains that he felt the theatre "was a great metaphor for Russian high society of the 1870s."

They were living their lives as if on a stage, they were performing constantly," he told the BBC's Rebecca Jones.

Keira Knightley, who plays the role of Anna Karenina, admits that the adaptation is "deeply, deeply risky".

"There aren't films made like this right now," she said.
