The clash between church and state goes all the way to the top today with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) hearing the cases of four British Christians who say they have been discriminated against because of their faith.

Christian sex therapist Gary McFarlane is one of them. He was sacked by the marriage counselling service Relate because they said they couldn't be sure he would provide proper sex advice to gay couples.

Speaking to the Today programme on BBC Radio 4, McFarlane said he does not judge gay people, but is seeking a "balanced playing field" so that the rights of Christians are equally recognised.

But Keith Porteous Wood, executive director of the National Secular Society, argued that if they win the case, it would cause discrimination "against a whole group of people who are already vulnerable".
