Joint operations between coalition troops and Afghan forces are being scaled back by Nato commanders following a number of so-called "green on blue" attacks, like the ones in which two British soldiers died this week.

The Defence Secretary Philip Hammond says that a partnership between British troops and Afghan security forces "involved risk" but is "essential to success" in the country.

Afghanistan's deputy foreign minister, Jawed Ludin, told the Today programme that joint operations "won't come to a halt" and said they were "crucial, but they could be conducted in a way that could reduce the risk of Nato soldiers suffering these attacks".
