John Terry has retired from International football and will therefore no longer play for England.

He appears before an FA disciplinary panel today - facing a charge of using racist language during a match last year - and he says his position has become untenable.

David Mellor, a former Conservative minister and Chelsea fan, has said that Terry should not be facing disciplinary procedures as he was cleared of racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand earlier this year.

"John Terry was acquitted after a high-profile case. Any punishment that needed to be meted out to him has already happened," Mr Mellor told Today presenter Evan Davis.

He added that Terry was "humiliated" by the process of being "dragged through the magistrates court" adding that he "is entitled to see it as a kangaroo court".

But Mark Palios, former chief executive of the Football Association, said: "The cases that go through a magistrates court or a criminal court can't be compared with the ones that are put in front of disciplinary panels because they're much more straightforward."
