Britain's biggest energy supplier, British Gas, has announced increases to the gas and electricity prices it charges customers. It will raise its charges for both types of fuel by about 6%, adding £80 a year to the average dual fuel bill. The increases will come into effect on 16 November.

The managing director of British Gas, Phil Bentley, defended the increases, telling Today presenter John Humphrys that much of the money would go towards investment rather than bigger profits for the company.

"These are important investments - investment in the infrastructure of Britain, the grid, is what will keep the lights on, and investment in all the green energy... energy efficiency and green economy not only creates jobs but it also helps our homes to become more energy efficient and that's the best way of keeping bills down."
