Justice Secretary Chris Grayling wants prisoners who leave jail in England and Wales to be given mentors - such as former offenders - to help them move away from a life of crime.

The scheme would be run by voluntary groups and private companies, who would be paid if they cut re-offending rates.

Marvin Nuro is a former prisoner who has become a mentor.

Talking to Today presenter John Humphrys, Nuro explained that mentors can offer support to stop people from re-offending.

"They can just be that kind of that rock that you need," he said.

"[They are] that someone that's in the background telling you, 'no, no, no don't do that, go this way, go this way, look at maybe this avenue, look at this charity, look at this organisation'.

"That can provide those things for you for now while you're at that stage where you're not sure where you're going.

"They can't change anything but… they can be that rock that you need… a prisoner will listen to a prisoner."
