HISTORICAL BROADCASTS
The assassination of President Kennedy in Dallas in 1963 was one of the biggest news stories of the decade. He was shot as he drove through Dallas in a motorcade with his wife Jackie. The report by the BBC's Washington Correspondent, Leonard Parkin, was heard around the world.

The 1960s saw the beginning of the space race; teenagers mobbed the Beatles wherever they went; the white minority in Rhodesia declared independence in 1965 and was denounced by Harold Wilson; the next year 116 children and 28 adults were killed when a coal waste tip collapsed onto Aberfan in south Wales; the anti-Vietnam War demonstrations culminated in a riot outside the American embassy in London in 1968; the next year man walked on the moon for the first time.

The Yom Kippur War began when Israel was attacked by Egypt and Syria. In 1975, the last American soldiers left Saigon and the city fell to the invading North Vietnamese Army; there was also momentous change in the Middle East - the Shah of Iran was forced from power.
