Council costs run to almost �1.8m

A break down of salaries and expenses has been published

Highland Council's 80 elected members cost the taxpayer almost £1.8m in salaries and expenses last year.

Figures for both sets of payments have been published on the local authority's website.

They showed convener Sandy Park claimed just over £45,000, of which £8,400 were expenses.

Skye councillor and TEC services chairman John Laing received more than £39,000, of which just over £15,000 was on expenses.

Council leader Michael Foxley, education chairman Bill Fernie and audit and scrutiny committee chairman Jim Urquhart claimed between £36,000 and £38,000 each in salary and expenses.

In April, the salaries of the council's senior management and committee heads were made available to the public on its website.

It showed chief executive Alistair Dodds's salary was £140,112.

The dual role of depute chief executive and director of finance received £115,995, while six other senior posts came with a salary of £105,450.

For councillors, most committee chairmanships came with pay of £24,480 and vice-chairs receive £19,962 or £16,234.
