38m primary proposals unveiled
Denholm Primary design
Denholm should have a new school built by next year
Scottish Borders Council has unveiled plans to spent 38m on six new primary schools in the region by 2012.

The construction programme will start next month when work begins on site to replace Denholm Primary School, which was destroyed by fire last year.

Also in the pipeline are a new school and a complete refurbishment of another primary in Peebles.

Lauder, Clovenfords and West Linton are the other sites which have been earmarked for educational development.

The schools contract has been awarded to Border Construction.

It is hoped the new Denholm school should be open by August next year.

While work on new schools at Lauder and the new Kingsland Primary in Peebles is scheduled to get under way next July, with both schools expected to be occupied in autumn 2009.

Flexible timetable

The next project will be refurbishing the current Kingsland building for Halyrude Primary, scheduled for completion by February 2010.

Later that year work should start on a new school at Clovenfords to replace Caddonfoot, with a target date of February 2011.

Finally, a new school for West Linton is also in the programme and it should be ready in June 2012.

The council has stressed that the timetable is flexible and that, if possible, it could be accelerated, particularly for Clovenfords.
