Politicians from all parties have joined to pay tribute to the man known as "Sunny Jim".

Labour peer Baroness Williams described him as "very generous-hearted" saying he was "capable of friendship, affection and love".

Others focused on his political achievements, Tony Blair calling him a "giant" of the Labour movement.
