Tourism is one of the largest industries in the world, and a key foreign exchange earner for many countries, including Thailand, Spain, Jamaica, Austria, and Turkey. The worldwide fear of travelling after 11 September caused international holiday bookings to drop dramatically, both in the US and the UK, and the industry is still struggling to recover. Hardest hit was the tourist industry in New York, where Broadway shows played to empty audiences, and tourism to Arab countries. Domestic tourism generally was less affected.
