School gets road safety measures

Pedestrian safety measures are to be put in place around the site of the new Les Nicolles school in Guernsey.

The Environment Department is planning to introduce what it is calling a Pedestrian Priority Zone.

On specified roads in the area of Les Nicolles a reduced speed limit will be in operation during school hours.

Pedestrian walkways will be painted on the roads around the site and reminder signs will be put up in a number of prominent locations.

Safety fears

The department is also planning to put in place a pedestrian crossing point at Oatlands.

The school is due to open in September.

Since the new school was proposed on the former Les Nicolles Vinery Site, islanders have had concerns about how pupils will get to the school.

It is proposed most students will travel by bus. But, for those walking, narrow roads and lack of pavements in the area have caused fears about safety.
