Historic house donated to trust
16 New Street
The building had been empty for 35 years
A Georgian town house in the heart of St Helier has been donated to the National Trust for Jersey.

Number 16 New Street, which has been designated a site of special interest, has been donated by the owners of the de Gruchy department store.

The house used to be the former YMCA building in St Helier.

When de Gruchy was bought by the UK firm Merchant Retail in 1999, it had been empty for 35 years.

The National Trust for Jersey will now begin repairing the building, which contains extensive interior panelling as well as a large ballroom.

The building has been gifted to the trust as part of a planning agreement between the trust, the Environment and Public Services Committee and the owners of de Gruchy.

The National Trust for Jersey says its first task is to make the building structurally safe before it outlines its plans for the future.
