Alcohol problems worsen on island
New research shows that more than half of deaths from liver disease in Jersey, some 52%, are alcohol-related.

It also suggests 70% of cases seen by medical staff every weekend in Jersey Hospital's Accident and Emergency department are also linked to alcohol.

The new research is being gathered as part of the States' five-year Alcohol Strategy to tackle the problem.

Michael Gafour, director of Jersey's Alcohol and Drug Service, said people drank twice as much as those in the UK.

He also said that 7% of the island's population was dependent on alcohol.

He called for younger people to be educated about the dangers.
