Island 'needs flu case readiness'

Virus testing
Results have confirmed none of the seven people tested have swine flu

Jersey should remain prepared to deal with swine flu because cases will occur on the island "at some point", the medical officer of health has said.

Seven people who had suspected cases later tested negative for the virus.

Dr Rosemary Geller said that although that was good news, the island still needed to be ready for any confirmed cases of the virus.

The Health Department said Jersey had enough anti-viral drugs to treat the entire population if necessary.

Dr Geller said the health authorities were "still closely monitoring this rapidly-changing situation".

She said: "There will be cases in Jersey at some point in the future and we need to be ready."

The Health Department would not confirm if those who have been tested for the virus were tourists or residents, but said it had no outstanding cases and everyone had been cleared.

It added that extra supplies of other medicines and equipment had been ordered, including protective clothing and oxygen.
