Health minister: Safety paramount

Health minister Mike O'Brien says primary care trusts have a legal responsibility to ensure patients receive high quality out-of-hours GP care.

His comments follow the publication of an interim report by the Care Quality Commission, which says out-of-hours care provided by private GP companies is not being checked thoroughly enough.

The review was prompted by the death of David Gray, who was accidentally killed by a German doctor working his first out-of-hours shift in Britain.
