Southend pier floodlit, September 1950. Three hundred people had to be rescued after being cut off by a blaze on the world's longest pleasure pier on England's south-east coast, 7 October 1959.

It took nearly two hours to bring the fire under control. The pier's manager, Frank Flintoff, said the pavilion was very badly damaged but he expected the pier to be open the following day.
