Albie Sachs - South African Constitutional Court
Albie Sachs
BBC Radio 4's Law in Action was broadcast on Tuesday, 25 July, 2006 at 1600 BST.

Albie Sachs is one of South Africa's most eminent judges. He was a leading member of the African National Congress, who was twice detained without trial under apartheid.

In 1988 while in exile, the South African security forces planted a bomb in his car. He lost the sight of an eye and an arm.

On his return to South Africa he played an active part in the negotiations which led to the country's transition to democracy. And In 1994, he was appointed by President Nelson Mandela to serve on the newly established Constitutional Court.

He explains the massive progress that the court has made in shaping a modern legal system in South Africa.
