Suffolk Punch foal arrives on cue
New foal
The filly arrived early on Mother's Day
A Suffolk Punch foal has been born on the outskirts of Ipswich - just in time for Mother's Day.

The mare Gertie gave birth to a filly in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Farmer and owner Tom Walne said they had been up for two nights waiting for the event.

The Suffolk Punch is said to be the oldest and rarest form of heavy horse in the UK.

With the breed dwindling, it is significant the newborn is a filly.

"There are between 60 and 70 breeding mares in the country," Mr Walne said.

"There are probably only 300 Suffolks altogether.

"They are very important. They are more rare than the giant panda, we are told."
