Cadbury campaigners stage events

Union leaders have held protests at the Cadbury Club in Bournville

Events have been held as part of a campaign to ensure Cadbury remains an independent company.

In Birmingham city centre, the city's poet laureate Adrian Johnson was writing poems about Cadbury, and people took part in a "mass chocolate-eating".

Shoppers in Leominster, Herefordshire - which is home to the firm's Marlbrook factory - were asked to sign a petition organised by the Unite union.

The firm is the subject of a hostile takeover by US food firm Kraft.

The company's bids have so far been rejected.

On Saturday, Legal & General Investment Management, which owns 5% of Cadbury shares, said Kraft's current offer did not meet "the long-term value" of the UK firm.

It said the food giant would have to increase its offer if it wanted to win support.

The chocolate-eating event in Birmingham's Victoria Square also saw people singing some of Cadbury's best-known advertising jingles, including "Everyone's a Fruit and Nut case".

Last month, Unite staged a protest against the takeover attempts at the Cadbury Club in the Bournville area of Birmingham where the company's main factory is.
