Schools remain closed after snow in West Yorkshire

More than 400 schools in West Yorkshire remained closed on Wednesday after further snowfall.

The bad weather forced many of the county's schools to shut on Tuesday. The Met Office has forecast further snow showers overnight.

Passengers on buses and on trains between Leeds and London and between Sheffield and Leeds faced disruptions.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service's patient transport service is only taking people to essential hospital appointments.

Safety concerns

The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust said a number of planned operations and appointments would not go ahead.

The trust said it was making efforts to contact patients but urged anyone who had not heard anything to contact them.

Local authorities across the county have said their grit supplies are running low.

Calderdale Council said it had already used more salt in the last three weeks than it used for the whole of winter last year.

It said: "That winter was already one of the worst winters in recent years but this recent period of winter weather has been exceptionally harsh."
