Grant bonus for historic mansion
South Front and Chapel of Tyntesfield - NTPL/Andrew Butler
The neo-Gothic house is a major tourist attraction for North Somerset
The National Trust is a step closer to being awarded 20m of funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for a unique Victorian mansion.

The trust acquired Tyntesfield, near Bristol, in 2002 for 25m on the basis that it would be seeking 20m of additional funding from the HLF.

The plan was to adapt the estate for up to 150,000 visitors a year.

The HLF has announced the application met its criteria and has been granted a "Stage One pass".

'Important milestone'

The National Trust will now work towards submitting a detailed "Stage Two" application, which it hopes to complete during 2006.

The funds will only be released once this application has been approved by the HLF.

Fiona Reynolds, director general of the National Trust, said: "Today's news is a very positive step forward for Tyntesfield.

"There is a great deal still to be done before funding becomes available, but Stage One approval is an important milestone for us. "
