Extra resources are to be put into developing facilities for "cycle tourists" across Cumbria.
The announcement by Cumbria County Council follows a recent consultation exercise on how to capitalise on so-called cycle tourism.
Now new routes and facilities are to be introduced across the county in an effort to make Cumbria a leading destination for leisure cycling.
The move follows the county's inclusion in the Tour of Britain 2005 in August.
Council bosses say expanded cycling facilities will add to the area's economic regeneration.
Tim Heslop, cabinet spokesman for economic well-being and regeneration, said: "Tourism in Cumbria is a huge industry and we are committed to making this the best destination for cycling."
