Plans to extend street drink ban
Plans have been unveiled to increase the number of towns in South Lakeland where street drinking is banned to try and crack down on disorder.

Byelaws have already prevented outdoor drinking in Kendal and Ulverston.

Now there are proposals to extend the byelaws to parts of Ambleside, Bowness and Windermere, Grange-over-Sands, Milnthorpe and Kirkby Lonsdale.

The laws give police the powers to be able to confiscate drink from people who are causing trouble.

It would not affect people sitting outside restaurants and cafes or having picnics.

Extensive mapping

Chairman of South Lakeland's Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, Andy Shine: "We as a partnership live in one of the safest parts of the country, which is tremendous.

"And it is because we are looking for it to continue this way that we do not want the unruly 5% to wreck everything for the other 95% of people who are having a good time."

He said they carried out an extensive mapping system of incidents to decide where to extend the scheme to.

The recommendations are due to go to South Lakeland District Council on Friday and if they are approved, to the full council in September.
