Council's new street drinking ban
An extension of a street drinking ban in two south coast resorts in Sussex has been approved.

A council cabinet meeting on Monday night agreed to extend drinking restrictions that already existed in parts of Hastings and St Leonards.

The scheme will now be advertised and Hastings Borough Council expects a blanket ban to be in force by August.

The council said the part bans did not work properly because street drinkers just went to other areas.

The move follows similar bans in Brighton and Hove and Eastbourne.

Councillor Godfrey Daniel said: "It means the police have the powers, if they perceive there to be a potential nuisance, to confiscate the alcohol or the containers.

"It won't stop people having a quiet picnic with their family on the beach, not causing any problem, with a small glass of wine. That's not going to be a concern."

The ban is intended to prevent people congregating and drinking in areas of Hastings like the so-called "bottle alley".
