Worried parents pressure schools

Parents at two schools in Carlisle are being urged to join a forum to express health and safety concerns.

The Richard Rose Central and Morton Academies opened in September and already there have been problems with temporary buildings and fire alarms.

Inspectors from Ofsted have been called in to address concerns and parents threatened to set up a pressure group.

But the school has set up a forum for parents to express their worries directly to managers.

National Union of Teachers Carlisle representative, Alan Rutter, said concerns had been expressed about locked fire doors and excessive travelling distance between temporary school classrooms.

'Future success'

A spokesman for the schools said: "We are in the process of contacting parents to explain about the development of the parents' forum that will cover both Richard Rose Central and Richard Rose Morton Academies.

"We would urge parents who are considering setting up a pressure group to take part in the forum instead but, if they still proceed with a pressure group, I would be happy to meet with them to discuss any issues.

"We are in no doubt about how important parents are to the future success of our schools in Carlisle.

"We absolutely wish to involve them in the running and development of the schools."
