Bus station due to be demolished
Bus station
The saga has lasted six years
Work to demolish Derby's Art Deco bus station is set to go ahead.

The building will be destroyed as part of the Riverlights development, which will see a new bus station, nightclub, apartments and restaurants built.

Derby City Council approved the scheme in October 2003 but the government has now given permission for the 83m development to proceed.

About 15,000 people signed a petition opposing the plans to demolish the station.

'Sadly neglected'

Councillor Ann Crosby said demolition is expected to start in October,

She said: "I am sure the bus station that replaces it will be cleaner.

"After all it couldn't be any dirtier because it has been sadly neglected over many years under different administrations.

"I think there has been a policy to make Derby's present bus station as uncomfortable as possible."
