City's biggest car park to close
Drake Circus, Plymouth
The temporary closure will mean a loss of about 600 spaces
The closure of one of Plymouth's biggest car parks is to take place in a fortnight's time.

Charles Cross car park is to be demolished as part of the Drake's Circus redevelopment.

It is intended to close the car park on or about 10 May in the latest stage in the 170m redevelopment of the area.

A new shopping centre and a 1,270-space car park is being built, but the axing of the existing car park will mean a temporary loss of about 600 spaces.

To offset the reduction in car parking spaces, about 100 on-street spaces will be created in about 20 different locations around the city centre.

It is planned to open the new car park in September 2006, although it is hoped part of it could be opened earlier.
