Yard workers 'unfairly dismissed'
Appledore Shipbuilders
A union spokesman says it is a victory for the workers
Five hundred workers at a Devon shipyard were unfairly dismissed, according to an employment tribunal.

The findings at the tribunal in Exeter means that the 500 employees from Appledore Shipbuilders in north Devon will be in line for 90 days pay.

A spokesman for the GMB Union, Gary Smith, says it is a victory for the shipyard workers.

But Mr Smith says it is unlikely that the workers will receive all the money owed to them.

The workers were made redundant at Appledore shipyard last September.

The GMB Union had claimed the way the company went about the matter was unfair.

Despite claiming victory, Mr Smith said: "The amount of money the people will actually receive will be governed by individual circumstances.

"The money will be paid by the Department of Trade and Industry, who will be looking to limit their liability.

"Though they're entitled to 90 days pay, the reality is they could received substantially less in their pockets."
