Military to help in sand removal
Instow beach
The sand can cause blockages which leads to flooding on the roads
The military is being called in to help move 10,000 tonnes of sand from a north Devon beach.

59 Commando, from RMB Chivenor, and the Amphibious Trials and Training Unit are to join the county council to try to lower beach levels at Instow.

The sand has to be removed because it blows onto the road and footpaths during the winter, causing blockages which occasionally lead to flooding.

It will be taken along the coast to North Beach to build up existing dunes.

Work is due to begin on Monday, weather permitting, and is expected to take up to three weeks.
