Plans for cycle track considered

Cycling champion Darren Kenny supports the council's plans
Plans to turn a town's recreational grounds into a major venue for cycling events go before planners on Monday.

Bournemouth council wants to build a 250-metre oval cycling circuit on Winton Recreation Ground.

The Dorset-based paralympian Darren Kenny, who won two cycling golds at the Athens games, is supporting the project along with Sport England.

But the plan has faced opposition from local people who fear they may not be able to use the park in the future.

'Open for everyone'

Roger Brown, head of leisure services at the council, said: "There has been much controversy and misunderstanding over this development and I would like to make it clear that the park will remain open for everybody.

"We have recognised the need for the cycle track to be upgraded and the investment offered by Sport England is a perfect opportunity.

"All cricket clubs affected can be accommodated at other council sites, and we have agreed to delay moving them until after they have celebrated their centenary."

The planning board will meet on Monday evening to consider the project.
