March to protest budget cuts
Hundreds of people have marched through Leicester to protest against city council budget cuts.

Voluntary groups such as Age Concern, Leicester Rape Crisis, and advice line Hitslink are among those facing cuts of hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Under the draft budget proposals, council tax rates in the city could also increase by up to 14%.

Organisers estimated that more than 1,500 people took part in the march.

The march was the biggest in the city since the poll tax protest, organisers said.

After the event, protestors promised to continue their campaign - with the next protest planned for Leicester City Council offices on New Walk on Monday evening.

The cuts, which amount to a reduction of 2m of funding to the voluntary sector, are designed to help cover a budget shortfall of 10m.
