Reprieve for charities
Ten voluntary groups in Leicester have been told they will partly or fully escape planned funding cuts by the city council.

The groups include Rape Crisis, Leicester Charity Link, the Belgrave Playgroup and Soft Touch.

The authority needs to make savings of 2m in order to help cover a budget shortfall of 10m.

Hundreds of people protested against the cuts when they were announced earlier this month.

Continuing campaign

The other groups having their grants partially or fully reinstated are the YMCA, the Alzheimer's Society, the Quetzal project, the St Matthews and Elders Project, Saffron Support for Elderly people, and the Leicester International Music Festival (for 2004-5 only).

In addition to the 10 groups, Leicester Counselling Centre and Relate Leicestershire have been saved pending a full review.

The groups involved say they will continue to campaign on behalf of the other groups.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Peter Coley insisted the planned cuts had only ever been provisional.

He said: "We always said from the start that there'd be a period of consultation.

"There was a list offered by officers for potentially removing funding and we said we would look at them quite closely.

"There has been response from the public and the groups themselves. We've looked at these very carefully and there are instances where we think 'Yes, these bodies do provide a worthwhile service'".

Councillors are still reconsidering all their cuts with the final decision being made at a full council meeting on 25 February.
