Art centre delay costs city 2.5m
Design for new theatre
Rafael Vinoly designed the glass-fronted theatre
A 47m project to build a new art centre in Leicester is set to be delayed by up to five weeks at an additional cost of 2.5m.

Developers claim the project to replace the Haymarket Theatre is one of the biggest cultural building programmes in Europe.

Work has been going on for a year on the iconic building, designed by Rafael Vinoly, in the city's cultural quarter.

A council leader said the extra money would be found from other budgets.

Councillor John Mugglestone, culture spokesman for Leicester City Council, said the extra cost for the Leicester Performing Arts Centre would be 2.5m.

"It'll be about a four to five week delay, we may catch that up in the summer," he said.

"There will be an increase in cost. We will have to cut something out and find it from somewhere, it will be a cabinet decision."
