More than 60 sites are being checked by the mobile cameras

The area's Safety Camera Scheme carried out more than 100 speed surveys this year and nearly 150 in 2006 to identify trouble spots.

A week-long crackdown started on Monday with more than 60 "exceptional" sites being checked by mobile camera vans.

The action comes in response to concerns voiced by people living near many of the sites concerned.

When a speed camera visits a site, an officer puts up temporary speed camera signs to let drivers know restrictions are in place and remind them to stay within the limit.

The campaign is also focusing on bikers - 899 were injured in Leicestershire and Rutland in the past three years, with 39 of these fatal.

Researchers discovered that 93% of drivers ignore a 30mph limit in Evington Lane in Leicester, nine out of 10 flout a 30mph limit in Rogues Lane at Cottesmore, and 75% of motorists regularly break a 40mph limit in New Ashby Road in Loughborough.
