The government would spend up to �50m and businesses would also be asked to invest in the academies.

Lincolnshire County Council said the proposal was in the best interests of children, parents and staff.

But some school leaders feel they may miss out and several have formed an alliance to fight the plans and compete for the government cash.

The schools under threat are the Priory LSST; Joseph Ruston Technology College; the City of Lincoln Community College; Moorland Infant and Nursery School; and the Usher Junior School.

The county council said if the city academies were set up it would mean more money would be available for teaching.

"It will create high-quality learning environments for students and provide them with a full range of courses to meet academic and vocational needs," said Councillor Christine Talbot, executive councillor for secondary education and healthier communities.

A consultation period lasts until 5 October and a decision is expected in November.

Seven Lincoln schools, known collectively as the Lincoln Specialists Federation, have joined forces to oppose the plans.

The government is proposing more academics across the country in a bid to introduce more independent control and higher educational standards.
