A public inquiry is to be held into the proposed 500m development of a new campus for the University of York.
City councillors had granted an outline application for the scheme on land to the east of Heslington, in a bid to increase student intake by a third.
But hundreds of residents objected to the proposals, citing the possible impact on roads, crime, noise and pollution.
The inquiry will begin at the Guildhall from 1000 BST on 25 April.
York is the sixth smallest university in England and says it needs to expand to maintain its position as one of the country's most respected.
The proposed campus, between Field Lane, the Low Lane A64 trunk road and Hull Road at Grimston, would enable the university to boost its student numbers from about 10,000 to 15,500.
