Nottingham's 7m new-look Old Market Square will be completed by Christmas, according to engineers working on the council-led project.
Workers said they had reached the halfway point of the 60 week-task and everything was running to schedule.
Project manager Wayne Metcalfe said most of the groundwork had now been completed on the square.
He said the area had been levelled off, meaning people would benefit from a larger public space.
The design will include a new water feature and foundations for Christmas trees.
