Plans for footbridge are dropped
Developers have dropped plans for a new bridge over the River Trent.

The scheme to link Beeston Rylands and Clifton, two areas of Nottingham, with a foot and cycle bridge was first suggested in 2006.

But the charity Sustrans which initially supported the project has backed down because of disabled access problems and fierce opposition.

One Beeston Rylands resident said local people were worried that the bridge would lead to an increase in crime.

Mike Williams said there were particular problems in the summer when young people gathered by the river.

He felt that residents would be "pretty happy" that the plans had been dropped.

"We've got a bridge two miles downstream that everybody has found quite adequate."

He added that more than 120 people attended a meeting "to show dissatisfaction at what these people were trying to do".

"It just wasn't on. Nobody in the area wanted to know about it," he said.
