City to get canal cash injection

British Waterways is investing more than 1m to improve Nottingham's canals and rivers.

The project will involve an upgrade of towpaths and walking routes in the Nottingham area along with other work.

The money will come from British Waterways, East Midlands Development Agency, English Partnerships and Nottingham City Council.

A study is also being carried out on the possibility of moving more freight on the River Trent.

British Waterways' marketing director Simon Salem said: "We need to be sure that if public money is being invested that there is a real prospect of it being used (for freight) and for a long time to come."

Work on Meadow Lane Lock in Nottingham will also help improve links between the Beeston Canal and the Trent Embankment - a distance of several miles.
