Work on 'missing' cycle path link

A missing link in a key cycle route in Nottingham will be completed in a �1.5m project organised by the city council.

Money from various agencies will be used to complete the section of the city's Big Track cycle route.

The missing link is between the Victoria Embankment on the River Trent and the city's nearby canal system.

The work will mean cyclists will not be forced to dismount and walk several hundred metres along London Road, city councillor Jane Urquart said.

Work is also under way on several other cycle route projects in the city.

Mrs Urquart said the money will come from the East Midlands Development Agency, British Waterways and the government's Growth Point scheme, which is aimed at improving infrastructure.

Other work will include �200,000 in improvements to the Castle Marina pedestrian bridge to allow cyclists to cross the canal more easily. The bridge work is expected to be finished in the spring of 2009.

The work on the various projects are an attempt to complete the city's Big Track route which is a 10-mile (16.1 km) off-road waterside path.
