Flood warning affects 700 homes

A flood warning has been issued for an area of Nottinghamshire containing about 700 homes as heavy rain led to rising river levels.

The Environment Agency said flooding of low-lying land at Old Basford was expected as water levels on the River Leen and Day Brook rose.

Flood water was expected to move in from the playing fields on Valley Road.

People were being advised to use sandbags if necessary and not to drive through flood water.

A risk assessment carried out by local authorities last year found the area was vulnerable to flooding.

The report found flood alleviation schemes for the area were unlikely to receive government funding, but development of surrounding brownfield sites in future could reduce the overall risk.

An Environment Agency spokesman said: "River levels are rising, there may be localised flooding.

"Levels are expected to continue to rise over the next few hours as further heavy rainfall is forecast."
