An off-duty fire officer who stopped to help victims of an horrific pile-up in which three boys were killed has been given an award.

Steven Johns was driving with his family when they came across the smash on Oxford's Eastern Bypass on 1 May.

He and his mother-in-law - a retired nurse - gave first aid to the victims, among them several children who had been on a birthday outing.

Mr Johns receives the Chief Fire Officer's Commendation.

Four people were killed in the pile-up, Josh Bartlett, Marshall Haynes and Liam Hastings - all aged 13 - and student Howard Hillsdon, who was 21.

The boys had been celebrating a friend's birthday when the Citroen they were in collided with Mr Hillsdon's Honda.
