Council plan to give up assets
A Shropshire council is considering giving away money, land and property to a charitable trust.

North Shropshire District Council is looking to set up a Community Asset Trust (CAT) which officials believe will be the first of its kind.

Members are being asked to consider what assets, including 8 million from the sale of council houses, should be transferred to the trust.

It is hoped the move would regenerate the area and provide affordable homes.

The CAT would also help to improve recreational and public health facilities.

Ben Proctor, council spokesman, said the group would be independent from the council and run by a board of nine unpaid directors.

He said three of these would be nominated by the council, three would be from the business world and three from the community.

On 10 October councillors will discuss the idea and if they agree the CAT should be up and running by the end of 2007.
